Hey, it’s Sarah!, A friendly Product Designer who loves making stuff for everyday designers. I developed this Speculative Case Study Guide + Template to assist you in creating a case study as a beginner when you have no real clients or have not landed a job.

Junior Designers face the challenge of trying to design something for their portfolio, but everything already exists and so they are confused about where to start.

Why this is hard for a beginner:

If you are creating a speculative case study, it is not necessary to focus on creating a completely new problem or solution. In the real world, a significant amount of work involves finding innovative ways to solve familiar problems, such as capitalizing on time-sensitive market opportunities or integrating multiple products seamlessly.

Here are two important points to take into account:

1. Software has become ubiquitous and widespread, and A lot of problems have been addressed, However, there may be new innovations that have not yet been discovered.
2. User interface patterns for desktop and mobile devices have nearly reached their maximum potential, with little need to reinvent the wheel when designing software for these platforms. However, there is still untapped potential in modalities like web3, voice, augmented reality, and virtual reality.

Good news:

However, there is so much room for creativity and innovation in taking existing solutions and approaching them from a unique angle. When building your portfolio it is important to give yourself a deadline and be mindful of the projects you choose to make sure that they align with your own unique positioning as a designer and with the opportunities you want to attract.
