Hey friends, it’s Sarah!, A friendly Product Designer who loves making stuff for everyday designers. I developed this UX Case Study Guide + Template to assist you in creating more engaging case studies quickly with the necessary details that will make them stand out.

<aside> 💡 But before sending your portfolio for a job application or to a recruiter, you have to make sure your case studies have everything a case study needs, including the clearest possible structure.

Great design always starts with proper groundwork, rather than diving head first into the design, I always advise you to first draft a case study outline and that is what the template will help you do! This will guarantee that your case studies truly reflect the narrative of each project you worked on, help you see what really belongs in your final portfolio, and prepare you better for job interviews.

Don’t forget, projects come in different forms, so take what fits yours. We don’t necessarily aim at getting 100% at the end!

It’s your duty as a designer to present case studies that showcase your full abilities and experience in a creative and engaging light explaining why, how, and what occurred and other critical details without being superficial or generic.

Guiding Principal for including something in your case study:

  • Your design process should progress in an easy-to-follow fashion
  • Show iterations: Identify places where you pivoted, or iterated based on valuable information
  • Design Decisions and rationales: for example, why you chose to analyse data a certain way or use a journey map or go for qualitative research methods, What design tradeoffs did you make, or why did you choose a certain design rationale?
  • Show versions, results, and challenges: Did you release just an MVP or more? Did you get any numbers, What did you learn that was new? Did you have to pivot in a different direction? What would you do differently?
  • A great case study does not cover everything: Make sure to proofread your work, this helps to eliminate typos and grammar errors. Do it before sending your work.
